Live Wires has launched a new range of 12 cards by Henri Stone based on the paintings from the ‘Crown Birdy’ series, © Henri Stone 2013. They depict New Zealand birds, insects and flowers with Crown Lynn pottery shapes and have a vintage watercolour feel. Some of the original paintings from this series are still available from Soul Gallery.
Above are ‘Huia and Clematis’ (left, SOLD) and ‘Kereru and Puriri’ (right, SOLD) in Crown Lynn McAlpine jug shapes. Below ‘Giant Weta and Tuatara with ancient NZ plants’ (SOLD) and ‘Tui and Pohutukawa’ (right, SOLD) in Crown Lynn hand-potted ribbed vase shapes.
Above left is ‘Mr Yellowhead and Miss Whitehead’ (SOLD) with NZ kidney and common ferns in a jug shape inspired by colonial folk paintings and Victorian pressed flowers albums. Above right is a ‘NZ robin Toutouwai‘ (SOLD) perched on a Crown Lynn cup, the ‘Mogambo’ coffee can, with a sprig of pink manuka.
Above left is ‘Piri Ruru’ in his hometown, Wainuiomata rugby jersey. Above right is Captain James Kaka, his signature and ship the Endeavour.
Below left are the Toutouwai and Waxeye perched on Crown Lynn tulip cups decorated with NZ flora and fauna. Below right is a Giant Kauri snail, Pupurangi, and some rare NZ mushrooms and ferns under a bell jar.
Below left is a medley of NZ flowers and plants in a traditional trail motif and below right is the ‘Beehive Birdcage’ with NZ clematis. Both available from Soul Gallery.
The ‘NZ Flower tree’ below left has recently been published as an iPhone 5/5S case by Live Wires NZ Ltd.
The works were inspired by wallpaper designs by William Morris (1834-1896) in his reduced palette of solid shapes with outlines and dots to enhance form. Morris looked to local flora and fauna as motifs and an earlier pre-industrial age for stylistic inspiration.
